School Applications/Essay Writing
It’s a cruel joke that at the time when you’re most confused about your identity you’re asked to describe who you are — in a mere 500-700 words. To help allay some of this pressure, we offer oneon- one essay support. Sessions focus on skillbuilding from the ground up; instead of simply red-lining the essay, we focus on improving a student’s writing through studying sample essays, brainstorming topics and giving mini-writing lessons based on a student’s strengths and weaknesses. The result is not only a compelling essay in the student’s own words, but a student who is a better writer all around.
Who is it for?
Anyone who is applying to a college or high school that requires essay writing can benefit from essay support. Many students like to use their sessions to organize the application process. We help them make excel spreadsheets for tracking to-do lists, timelines, essays needed, etc. We also help students practice for on-site interviews and essay writing experiences, which are increasingly common for many NYC Public High School applications.
When and how much?
We typically recommend one hour a week starting in the fall when students are applying to school. Many students also elect to come for a concentrated course during the summer, enabling them to begin the school year with a draft of the Common Application essay, and possibly some answers to the supplementary questions for the colleges on their list, as well as a spreadsheet overview of important dates for applications, tests, and interviews.
